Copenhagen Climate Change talks applaud US EPA proposal to regulate GHGs. Is this an option for Australia?
The U.S. EPA has declared that greenhouse gases pose a threat to human health, which may set a precedent for environmental regulators to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from facilities.
The US EPA's stance was welcomed at the opening day of climate change talks in Copenhagen where a record 15,000 global stakeholders are endeavouring to dvelop a new international post-Kyoto agreement to combat rising seas, desertification, floods and cyclones caused by human -induced climate change.
"Inlight of the Liberal National coalition reneging on its agreement to support the Australian government's amended ETS, our federal and state government environmental agencies could at some point adopt the US EPA's approach to regulate GHG emissions through their Clean Air legislation. However, it is surprising that Australian environmental pollution licences that I've come across over 20 years or so don't explicitly place any limits to control GHG emissions," commented Nav Brah from NCSI International.
